Automotive Terms

ABS or Anti-Lock Brake System: This braking system is designed to help you stop quicker when normal brakes would cause you to skid. The system consists of wheel speed sensors, modules and control assemblies.

ALTERNATOR: A belt driven voltage generator which supplies the vehicles’ electrical system with power and recharges the battery.

BRAKE ROTOR:
A circular disc that the brake pads rub against to stop the vehicle. Rotors will warp and wear below safe limits depending on the type of braking the vehicle is doing.

BRAKE DRUM: A circular drum attached to the wheels for the brake shoes to rub against to stop the vehicle. Drums will warp and wear below safe limits due to frozen brake cables and driving habits.

BRAKE PADS AND SHOES: These components are very vehicle specific due to the weight and design differences in vehicles. The pads and shoes are made of special compounds to absorb heat and to stop the vehicle by pushing against drums or rotors. Always use the best brake pads and shoes.

COMPUTER: The vehicles’ computer may consist of up to 26 or more different computers that control various functions on the vehicle. Computers may also be known as ECM-ECU-MODULE. Computers are very sensitive to voltage and must not have excessive alternator voltage or stray AC voltage induced into the computer or damage will result.

CAM AND CRANK SENSORS: These sensors help the computer and ignition module to determine where the piston is in the firing position and where the valves are. Loss of signal can stall the vehicle or cause it not to start.

FUEL INJECTOR: A devise used to spray fuel into each cylinder. These injectors can become clogged and cause drivability problems.

IGNITION MODULE: This module supplies the signal to the ignition coils for proper timing of the spark to the cylinders.

IGNITION COILS: The coils supply the high energy spark needed by the spark plugs to fire the fuel mixture. You may have 1-8 coils.

OXYGEN or O2 Sensor: An electronic sensor that measures the amount of oxygen in the exhaust. The computer uses this information to deliver the proper amount of fuel to the engine.

STRUTS: A shock and spring assembly used as a major steering component on vehicles.

TIMING BELT: A rubber belt driven by the crankshaft to rotate the camshaft and in turn open the valves at the proper time. THESE BELTS BREAK AND CAUSE MAJOR ENGINE DAMAGE.
