The small town of Sykesville, MD is located in the Patapsco River Valley in southern Carroll County, 20 miles west of Baltimore. Roughly 4,000 residents live across a land area of just 1.5 square miles.
The land of present-day Sykesville started out as part of the Springfield Estate, owned by wealthy shipbuilder William Patterson. In 1825 his son sold 1000 acres of the estate to James Sykes. Much of the town that first came to be was destroyed by a flood in 1868, then rebuilt on the Carroll County side of the Patapsco River, and finally incorporated in 1904.
Downtown Sykesville today encompasses the Sykesville Historic District. Points of interest include the Sykesville Schoolhouse Museum, the Gate House Museum of History, and an original B&O Railroad station that was built in 1883 as the second stop along the historic B&O main line.
